Pop Machine

Director:
Pat Pecorella, Wilmette, IL
Running time - 16:00 minutes
Genre - Drama
Synopsis:
Chloe goes to her dying father in a hospital. He attempts to communicate with her but is interrupted by coughing and offensive intrusions of his raunchy girlfriend, whose claustrophobic presence, combined with the older couple’s disturbingly overt sexuality, drive Chloe to escape. Strangely, Chloe finds solace from a pop machine. She recalls her childhood and we discover why the machine comforts her. Chloe gains strength and when the girlfriend pushes her too far, Chloe kicks her out. She later fears that demanding quiet with her father was selfish and apologizes. But her father takes her hand, reassuring her, and she relaxes into sleep. In the song-and-dance dream sequence that ensues, Chloe experiences a transformation and comes to realize something she’s always misunderstood about her father.
