2006 FFF Panel Discussion

Panel Participant - Dan Thompson

Dan Thompson

Lubbock native son and Los Angelan Dan Thompson is, by trade, an animated filmmaker. He is known for his work on The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat and Heavy Metal: The movie and won an Emmy in 1992 for Outstanding Animated Program as the director of the Rugrats animated television series. Thompson has done animation work for Sony Pictures, Nick Toons, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures and Walt Disney, to name a few of the projects in which he has been involved. His role is often that of timing director, but he has served in many other capacities as well; including producer and director. He has also done work for television commercials and has directed animation to advertise 7-UP and Liquid Plummer, to name just a few.
Inspector Gadget, G.I. Joe, Dennis the Menace and many other beloved characters can thank Thompson for his vital part in bringing their animated lives to the screen. He is currently working on the development of an animated series for Duck Studios called King Gnat, which features a gnat who lives in Las Vegas and keeps a close eye on international evildoers, in addition to playing a major role in bringing them to justice. “The speck on the wall that sees all” is how Thompson describes his original idea for this series.
Thompson studied animation and cartooning at the Chouinard Art Institute and illustration at the Art Center School, both in Los Angeles, CA. His first professional home was with a major television commercial production house. For the past 40 years, Thompson has enjoyed an exciting and colorful career as an animator, director and producer and has traveled the world ‘on the studio’s ticket’ to do his work. Thompson is also a painter, and his work is on view in a solo exhibition entitled Caustic Cargo in LHUCA’s Gallery 3.
