Tom Copeland

Bio - A South Plains native, Tom Copeland grew up in Meadow and began his theatre career in high school under the direction of drama coach, Noyce Burleson. His technical skills took him to film and television production and a 30-year profession that has more than its share of highlights. He was a crew member on the first five seasons of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, and after several years a freelance film technician, he joined the Texas Film Commission as a location scout in 1983. Since 1995, he has been the Film Commission's director. His work includes marketing Texas' statewide locations, workforce and support services to local, national and international producers; researching and recommending film locations; cutting red tape; and finding whatever filmmakers need to make Texas locations their first choice. Mr. Copeland has worked with hundreds of films made in Texas, including FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, LONESOME DOVE, COURAGE UNDER FIRE, LEAP OF FAITH, THE ROOKIE, THE ALAMO (2004), the SPY KIDS trilogy, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and SECONDHAND LIONS.

According to the Texas Film Commission, the film industry contributes more than $229M to the State's economy, nearly $340M if the filming of sports events is included. The Texas Film Commission works to support the film industry in the State, providing information and resources to Texas filmmakers and those from out of state who use the State's various scenic locations and extensive professional technical resources for the creation of mainstream and independent film as well as TV programming. Information on the Texas Film Commission website includes advice for people who would like to appear as extras in films made in the state as well as how to promote locations for filming. It also outlines the economic incentives available to out-of-state filmmakers. More information can be found at : www.governor.state.tx.us/film.
